Looking After Your Money When Moving House

Posted on March 6, 2018November 25, 2020 by Tina Roth

Moving house is a costly procedure, and there’s little you can do to avoid that. However, there is something you can to reduce that cost. It’s all about taking time to plan your move and consider all your options in order to save money without cutting corners or compromising. You need to look after your money when you move house because you’re likely going to need funds to decorate and renovate your new household. Here are a few ways in which you could save or even make money so as to ensure you’re adequately prepared for your new life and your new home.

Moving House

Selling your old home.

Before you commit to buying a new home, you need to do your research with regards to selling your old one. A new house is an expensive purchase, whether you buy it outright or simply put down an initial deposit and pay a mortgage. There’s no avoiding the fact that you’ll need serious financial security in order to afford such a big asset. Of course, selling your old home is your opportunity to balance out the cost of buying your new one. In other words, you shouldn’t be in a rush to get your old house off the market so that you can move. If you want to look after your money then you need to make as much profit from your existing property as possible. The goal is to upsell your old home. You can make a lot of money by renovating your existing home to increase its value.

And it doesn’t have to cost a lot to do this. At the end of the day, your goal is to increase the value of your home in the eyes of the buyer. And that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune on “sprucing up” your humble abode. In fact, you need to consider the opposite type of renovation and strip down your home. People want to buy a house with potential. They don’t want to buy a home that looks “lived in”. They want to see minimal furnishing and design work so that they can get an idea of the available space in the home and all the decorative pieces they could add to the place. A fresh lick of white paint on the walls could help to freshen up the interior whilst keeping the design neutral and open to future changes, for example. You also need to think about the exterior of your home; curb appeal affects the first impression of potential buyers. If you want to increase the value of your home then you need to instantly “wow” viewers with some nice landscaping, a power-washed driveway, and fresh paint on the front door.

Decluttering for the big move.

One of the smartest ways to save money when moving house is to declutter. You should be aiming to declutter anyway because you don’t want to bring your mess to your new home. This is a chance for a fresh start, so you need to seize the opportunity to get rid of your old junk. Decluttering will save you money when it comes to hiring a moving truck because the price you’re charged depends on the number of possessions that will be transported. You might want to click here to look at moving services from a reputable company. It’s important to get an idea of pricing for hired movers so that you can get the cheapest quote possible. Declutter so that you can make your move less costly in terms of time and money.

Set up the utilities in your new home

When moving house you will need to setup the utilities in your new home and close down the ones at your previous address. This will include your energy, water bill, broadband and more. In the UK you will need to make sure you get your council tax setup properly as this will be one of the most expensive monthly payments. Go through a good checklist for setting up utilities when moving home.

Getting a house survey.

As a final piece of advice, you should really get a house survey so as to assess the condition of your new property before you move in. There might be repair work that needs to be done on certain electrical fittings or pipes, for example. This could save you a lot of money on utility bills in the long run. You also don’t want to face a hefty maintenance bill in the future because a minor issue was missed. Getting a professional opinion will put your mind at ease.
